August Wrap Up

Welcome to August Wrap Up. This month reading was hard. I didn't complete the books I wanted to for various reasons. But completed others. I also completed my 2017 Goodreads challenge for the year. 24 books this year which I have done - it includes my DNF books but I think even without them this year I still have completed 24 books.
  • Time Travelers Wife
πŸ™…πŸΌ✖️. I started the book but didn't get any further then about 20 pages. I was slowly getting through it but reading other books seemed to take over. Check HERE for my DNF review.

  • Fan Girl
    • Rainbow Rowell
Check ✔️.  I finished rather quick. Check HERE for my review.

  • Love Anthony
    • Lisa Genova
my first DNF in a while. Check HERE. I hoped for better but it just didn't get any better. It was just flat lining. I have DNF'd it because I have tried so many times to read it but can't.

  • Bad Girls
    • Jacqueline Wilson
✔️. This books is such a classic childhood book for me. In fact it was the book that I finished that was the 24th book and completed my challenge on Goodreads for 2017.

The Time Travelers Wife DNF Book Review

Book: The Time Travelers Wife
Author: Audrey Niffenegger
Pages: 546
Released: 2003
Started: July 2017
Finished: August 25th 2017
Goodreads: 1*

I just confused by the book so bad that I wasn't picking it up at all and it felt pointless continuing a book that I really had no interest in finishing or keep picking up.

I know it's all about time travel but it's just not my thing after starting to reading it. I wanted to give it a fair chance, and I did, but if I am not getting anywhere near the end of a book by the time I normally do then I know I have to admit defeat and that's what I am doing. I haven't picked it up in ages, I don't want to pick it up and I don't think I will because it's on the pile that I want to donate.

The fact that I have picked up four other books, finished two, halfway through another and stated the fourth just shows that I am so over the book

So I am sorry to those who loved the book, but I just didn't. It was far to complicated in what I had read it the book.

Book Talk: Dorothy Koomson and Why I Love Her 😍 Books πŸ“š

Welcome to a book Talk all about the amazing Dorothy Koomson.

  • How I Came Across Her Books
It's a long story and I tend to babble. So I was in sainsburys with my mum, - we normally never went into sainsburys because there were other food stores that were easier to get to where we lived - but this particular day we had gone to sainsburys because it was close to where we were going or had been. It wasn't the one in the town we lived in but the next town over where my mum worked. At the end of the aisle by the tills were some books on sale and for some reason I was drawn to two books in particular. Marshmallows for Breakfast and My Best Friends Girl. So my mum said pick them up. They were on a good deal 2 for £7 or £4.99 each. So I picked them up, we paid and left. From that moment on I loved her books. I found two more of her books (The Chocolate Run and The Cupid Effect and again fell in love) but the saddest thing was I lent three of the books out to someone and never got them back, years later I got one of the books as a present for Christmas and I found two more different books.

  • Range of Topics
In the books that I've read (marshmallows for Breakfast, My Best Friends Girl, Goodnight, Beautiful and The Ice Cream Girls) there are a wide range of topics covered that
  • Adoption
  • Alcoholism
  • Lies
  • Surrogacy
  • Murder
  • Love
  • Prison
  • Children
  • Single parenthood
  • Divorce
  • Betrayal
  • Racism
  • Friendship
  • Loss of a friendship
  • Loss of a relationship

  • Diversity
I find that most of the women authors that I read are white women who very rarely write a book with a black character in it (in fact even men authors there isn't a lot of black characters in their books or even characters of different ethnic origins. I can only think of four authors who have included different race and colour in their books. JK Rowling in the Harry Potter Series, John Green in Paper Towns, The Help by Kathryn Stockert and To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han are the only books that stand out that have various different ethnic backgrounds in them). But with Dorothy Koomson's book she has covered the fact that the characters are all different and not all just one ethnic background. What I also love about her books is that she covers all the topics and that she doesn't shy away from stereotypes and that people of colour go through more then what we think they do.
What I liked about The Ice Cream Girls (which blew my mind it was so brilliant) was that even though I thought that one person had done the bad thing, it wasn't at all. It wasn't because of the colour of her skin it was because of the fact that she was the one to stand up for herself first. Also that your mind always changing back and forth between people who could have done it.

  • Everyday Kinda Problems but not the classic First World Kinda Problems
Because of the vast majority of different topics that Dorothy covers in her books they are very much true to life kind of problems that majority of people go through everyday. They are so relatable to so many different people around the world. By first world I mean internet, tv, cell phone πŸ“± that kinda things. They cover bigger topics that people face everyday.

  • UK covers
The U.K. Covers of the books are so beautiful  - not that the North American ones aren't - but the uk versions are so beautiful.

  • Why I Love Her Books
Apart from they keep me hocked. It's the fact that Dorothy Koomson's writing style is right up my ally. Most books I read seem to have the same kind of themes, storyline, plots, how ever you want to put it, unlike most other books I read Dorothy's are from the perspective of black women. Dorothy has a way of bringing me in. For me I know a book will be good when I can imagine the characters off the page, and if they are standing in front of me and that's what Dorothy's books do so well. Admittedly I haven't read all of her books, but those I have are always on top of my recommendations for other people to read.

Books I Have Read
  • The Cupid Effect
  • The Chocolate Run
  • My Best Friends Girl
  • Marshmallows For Breakfast
  • Goodnight, Beautiful
  • The Ice Cream Girls

Love Anthony DNF Review

Book: Love Anthony
Author: Lisa Genova
Pages: 320
Released: September 2012 (hardback) April 2013 (paperback)
Started: August 13th 2017
Finished: August 15th 2017
Goodreads: 1*

Welcome
To my DNF post about Love Anthony. I wanted to love the book, but couldn't. Out of all the books that I have read this year (those I have finished and DNF'd) I think this is the biggest disappointment of them all.

My Review
I've had the book on my shelf for what seems like forever. I've tried to read it but only got as far as the first chapter.

Ok so this is after reading 66 pages. I wanna strangle somebody. I mean it's so slow and boring that I think paint would be more fun to read about. I find that the characters are really selfish and self obsessed. There are a lot of people who go through divorce or having a child with autism, but in the way they are coming across I wanna scream and shout at them. Beth going to look for the woman her husband cheated on her with is so cliche.

It's one of those books that I want to throw across the room.

Because I didn't like it enough to put myself through any more of the trash, I gave up. At 66 pages.  Which most of my other DNF books this year I at least got to triple digits before that happened.

The way that the book is laid out is a massive pet peeve of mine. The spacing between the end of a line and the end of the book for me was far to big.

The copy of the book I have is the black cover one. What I will say is that I don't understand why there is three versions of the book, two really similar and actually have a massive part in the book (that I read up to) where the third is completely different.

I know that the book covers autism, and while up to page 66, it touches on it, it's not really enough.  It's just how he (Anthony) was diagnosed and a little trait that he has.

I didn't feel connected to any of the characters and the main two women Beth and Olivia could easily be confused as just side characters

The one star that I gave the book is being generous.

I found some other people via Goodreads that had the same kind of feelings as I did towards the book

Fan Girl Review

Book: Fan Girl
Author: Rainbow Rowell
Pages: 445
Publisher: St. Martins Press
Published: September 2013
Genre: Contemporary YA
Started: July 2017
Finished: August 13th 2017
Goodreads: 2*

My Review
When o first read the book back in 2014, I wasn't a massive fan of it. The word 'fan Girl' was so over used at the time I actually rolled my eyes at the title of the book.

Now re reading it again three years later I like it a little more then I did before, but there are parts of the book that I shake my head at because it's so boring.

One of the things that I do like is just how different Cath and Wren are. I like how their names are a play on a name and how even though they are twins when they get to college they go their own way, even though Cath doesn't want to in the beginning. I like how they both have valid points about their mother after she walked out in them.

One of the things that annoyed me was the fact that some times in the book I had to go back and re read some of the parts where Cath was speaking to other people because I would get confused about who was saying what

A lot of other people really like this book, but I'm not there and even after re reading the book, I have come to the conclusion that it's just like any other YA book out there. The girl who falls in love with her roommates ex boyfriend (Cath). The one who drinks to much (Wren). Cleaver boy who dumbs himself down (Levi) and the girl who doesn't care about anything (Regan)

  • Cath
I found Cath a little annoying. I don't want this to sound bad or anything, I know the story is mainly about her, but I think Rainbow Rowell could have made her a little more interesting. It was obvious from page one that it would be Cath that was the one who would have a love interest rather then her sister. I feel as though Cath wants to let go and grow but cant because she's scared. She doesn't like change and at the first sign of a struggle she wants to give up.

If you have read my review on To All The Boys I've Loved Before, then you know I'm not a massive fan of Lara Jean the main character in that book, to me Cath is almost as bad as Lara Jean is just a bit older.

  • Regan
I liked Regan. She has one of the attitudes that I like to see in characters.

  • Levi
At first I wasn't to sure on Levi. (I love his name but all I can see is evil) but as I have read more into the book he seems like a decent person.

  • Wren
Wren is literally my favourite character in the whole book. She's the typical person you'd imagine on a campus, just out having fun

Over all this book has gone down in my opinion. Yes even though I like it more the second time around. There is really nothing special about the book.

People have said that Rainbow Rowell is a different kind of YA author, but to be honest she is just the same which is sad because I wanted to enjoy her other work but feel that it would be the same kind of thing.

One of the things I had found myself doing through out the book was skipping all the fan fiction parts.

Something I did like about the book was the font, the style of it and how big it was really suited the book. I liked how it made the book look bigger then it actually was.

I was always told if your reviewing something, or talking about someone you should do it like a sandwich. The bread is the good parts and you filling is the bad parts. This review seems like it's the other way around. That the filling is the good parts and the bread is the bad. I say that because it seems like all I've done is bash this book. One of the biggest things about this book is the inconsistency of it. Parts of it I find go really quick while other parts go slower and harder to read.

Because it has changed my options on it the second time around I have rated it down for a rating on Goodreads from a solid three and half to a barley making a two.

July Wrap Up and August TBR

I've just realized that I didn't do a July TBR, I only had two books on it, and forgot to post it. #MyBad

I had Since Last Summer on my TBR for this month which I have read. HERE for my review.

This month I haven't read to much. I've been in a serious reading slump. I mean it took 2 weeks to read a book I know I can read in a week.

I don't normally read two books at once. My poor dyslexic brain can't do it, but I started reading The Time Travelers Wife and finding it hard, so I picked up Fan Girl.

  • The Time Travlers Wife
It's been sitting on my shelf since forever.  I keep meaning to read it but never gotten around to it. Now I have I know it's going to take forever.

  • Fan Girl
    •   Rainbow Rowell
Its been a  while since I have read fan Girl. So it's about time I read it again. The first time I wasn't a massive fan of it.

Books I Have Never Read (Some That I Never Intend To Either)

Welcome
To a post about books that I have never read. I wanted to do a big post on it, as some of the books I mention in this post I have no desire to read, because of how popular they are or I haven't read as I just haven't brought them yet

  • Hunger Games
    • Suzanne Collins
Because of the over hype of the books when they first came out I have never wanted to read them. Even now I don't want to read them.
At the moment I don't plan on ever reading them. They are way to over hyped even now years later.

  • Lola/Isla/Anna
    • Stephanie Perkins
The books have always interested me but I have never got around to picking them up for various reasons.
These are three books that I would like to read one day.

  • Divergent
    • Veronica Roth
Just like Hunger Games I have never wanted to read the books. They were way to popular for my liking and just something I never really been interested in.
I have no intention of ever reading them.

  • Elenor and Park
    • Rainbow Rowell
It's not because I'm not interested in the book, it's just the fact that the author is so popular that I haven't read any of her other books.
Maybe one day I will read it but I am on the fence.

  • Amy and Rogers Epic Detour, Second Chance Summer, The Unexpected Everything
    • Morgan Matson
Again I am not against reading anymore Morgan Matson books, it's just that I just haven't picked them up yet.
I would like to read more Morgan Matson books

  • The Mortal Instruments
    • Cassandra Clare
I have heard so much about the books that I'm divided about if I want to ever read them.
There has always been something about this series that I have never wanted to read I don't know if it's the covers that put me off or just the fact I don't really like reading the genre it's in

  • The Infernal Defices
    • Cassandra Clare
Just like The Mortal Instruments I have heard a lot of conflicting things about the books that I am unsure if I ever want to read them.
Mainly the same reason as the Mortal Instruments is the reason I don't wanna read this series.

  • Crossed and Reached
    • Ally Condie
I own Matched but have never gotten the last two books in the series. I have heard a lot about them and how many people are disappointed with them but I want to get them and make my own opinions of them.
I want to read them as I have read the first book.

  • PS I Still Love You and Always and Forever, Lara Jean
    • Jenny Han
I am not a massive fan of the first book, but like the ally Conde books that I previously mentioned I would love to get them, but just to say that I have read them.

  • The Chocolate Run, The Cupid Effect, That Girl From Nowhere, The Woman He Loved Before, The Rose Patel Beach, The Flavours of Love (Dorothy Koomson)
I love Dorothy Koomson books and I can't believe I have never read these books. At some point I would love to complete my Dorothy Koomson collection.
Of course I want to read these books.

  • Maze Runner
    • James Dashner
I don't know why but I am drawn to reading The Maze Runner series but have never gotten around to it.

  • The Summer I turned Pretty series
    • Jenny Han
I haven't ever read The Summer I Turned Pretty Series by Jenny Han. Son many people have son many conflicting feelings about the series, and if I am being truly honest I have no idea if I'd even like it because of how much I disliked To All The Boys I've Loved Before

  • Sarah Dessen Books
I haven't read a lot of Sarah Dessen Books and I really want to

August 2nd: Book Covers I'd Live In || T5W

Welcome to a T5W, and the first one of August. This weeks is all about book covers we'd want to live in

  • Beneath The Glitter
    • Elle and Blair Fowler
Its not a great book by any stretch of the imagination but the cover is so beautiful.

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Illustrated
The Chamber of Secrets has always been one of my favourite books from the whole series, so when I got the Illustrated version of the copy it blew my mind of how beautiful it is and makes me want to live in the whole Harry Potter world more

  • The uk cover art for some of Dorothy Koomson's books
The uk πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ covers of Dorothy's books are beautiful that you just wanna jump into and be a part of the world.

  • Rules of Summer
It's something about the cover of the book that makes me think of a beach and how I wanna go back to England and sit on the beach again

  • The Great Gatsby
The copy that I have is so classy and classic
