July Wrap Up

Books Read: 2
Book Challenge Complete %: 24 books out of 20, making my goodreads challenges 80% complete.
Am I Ahead? And By How Many Books: 7 books ahead of schedule.

This month has been a weird month for reading, I tried to read Girl on the Train, but couldn’t get into it at all

The Devil Wears Prada is one of my favorite books ever, and after the disaster of trying to read Girl on the Train I had to read something that I knew was good.

Girl A
Though I did read Girl A this month and putting it here I am not putting it in my overall wrap up for the month, or the year, because I’ve already read the book this year.

I am currently Reading Me Before You

Girl On The Train: DNF Review

Book: Girl On The Train
Author: Paula Hawkins
Pages: 395
Publish Date: 2015

Ok before I get into the actual review part of the book, I wanna say I am shocked. I thought the book came out in 2010/2011 time frame not 2015.

I have read 34 pages as I’m writing this next bit. This book isn’t great so far. It just seems like two 30 something women who want to moan about their crappy and predictable life’s.

I got to about 60-80 pages and I was so disappointed. I always try and not have high expectations of books that are super popular and have movies made about them but I had to put the book down and leave it before I pick it up again. I feel as if the positive reviews are way to nice for such a dull book so far.

In what I did read I felt confused.

Completed lost at what was happening.

That it’s putting London England in such a poorer light than it already has.

That what I did read was irrelevant and pointless.

So this review is just what I thought on it to the point I put it down. Seriously if I read anymore at this point I would want to throw the book at the author and say it’s a brick. I will at some do a new review.

Teen Challenge vs Goodwill Book vs Chapters Book stores

I absolutely love buying books from thrift stores. And I love buying from the regular book stores (where I live it’s Chapters). I don’t have a favourite bookstore because they all offer something different.

Sure thrift store book shopping you can’t get the same rewards as you do in Chapters, but you get different rewards. You may find a book that you really want to read that is a lot cheaper than in the chapters book store. While I tend to look at those sale tables anyway, there is something about saving taxes that make it all better. Last years I spent about $20 on 10/15 books at the thrift store, where spending $20 on those books in Chapters would have cost over $250.

Teen Challenge

The best thing about teen Challenge is the price of the books. 75 cents. You can’t beat that. It’s a great price. I’ve gotten four books in a popular series for $3. But just because the price of the books are great sometimes there isn’t a great deal of books and it is poorly organized. It is also a hit and miss

Goodwill Book Store

The best thing about the goodwill book store is the variety of books in the store and the way that it’s set up. The prices are great at $3-$5 a book depending on what kind of book it is (Mass Market size, regular size paper back or regular size hard back) the books are a little more expensive than teen Challenge but I have to say that’s the only downfall.

Chapters Book Store

Chapters is a great book store. There is no denying that. But obviously most of the books in there are all full price, and something that my small budget doesn’t allow. With the other two stores they don’t add tax on to their books where as chapters does. That’s why when I go in there I tend to look at books that are on sale. Also books that are on really good sales (mainly the book stand tables) are books that I haven’t seen anyone review. Also I tend to go into Chapters when I know I won’t find a certain book at the thrift store at all.

TTT Character Freebie What Makes A Great Character

This weeks Top Ten Tuesday is a Character Freebie and I decided to do it on what Makes a great character. Weather the character is good or bad. Look at Voldemort vs Harry Potter. Both a great characters for very different reasons.

I couldn’t think of ten things that make a great character but these seven things are definitely something I look for.

1. If I Can See Them In Real Life
When I am reading a book I want to be able to have an image of them in my head that would translate to screen.

2. They Are Portrayed Well
If a book is made into a movie or tv show I want the character to be played well. I know they won’t get everything but if they are close to what was written in the book then I’m happy

3. Their Personal Development
I like to see them grown within the book(s) I think it’s important for all characters to grown not just the main character and I think it should be through the whole book or series of books.

4. If I Want To Know More About Them
Almost as if they are real people and I am getting to know them as friends.

5. I Want More Of Them
If it’s a stand alone book and I want that book to have a sequel just so I can see how they have developed over time. I think a great example is My Best Friends Girl. I want to know what happened to Kamryn, Tegan, Luke and Nate

6. I Want Someone Relatable
I want someone who is really relatable that you could see yourself being friends with at some point in life.

7. Be Unpredictable
I like characters who are unpredictable, what ever it maybe I like characters who are different, or not ashamed of who they are.

I don’t know what my favourite genre is, but these are a few of my favourite books in the same kind of genre.
